KANUNGU– The Executive Director of Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) Prof Charles Kwesiga has underscored the importance of imparting skills to the young generation as the only way to transform the country to a middle income country.
Prof Kwesiga made the remarks on Sept 19th 2021 while speaking as a Guest of Honor at the commissioning of Kanungu Galz Network (K16 Galz) Women Training Center in Kanyamisinga village, Nyakishojwa Parish in Katete Sub County, Kanungu District.
The K16 Women Training was established to empower women and school drop outs with skills so that they can become dependent.
The Training Center was recently given an assortment of tailoring machines where women and girls will get skills so that they can become self reliant employ themselves.
Prof Kwesiga noted that the government policy on skilling Ugandans is a deliberate move to ensure that many Ugandans are able to get out of poverty because a person with skills can earn income from what they produce.

Speaking on behalf of the K16 Galz Network, Prof Augustus Niwagaba said that their vision is to see more disadvantaged women in Kanungu being empowered so that they can become dependent on themselves but not becoming beggars.
Prof Niwagaba thanked all stakeholders like Kanungu District Local Government which donated 5 Acres of land where the Training Center will be constructed and Rotary Club through which a lot of support has been channeled to them.
Prof Niwagaba called on every one in Kanungu to support K16 Galz Network initiatives saying that their objectives will transform the lives of women in the District and beyond.

Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Hajji Shafque Ssekandi Sengooba hailed the K16 Galz Network for starting up the Women Training Center which he said was in line with supplementing the government programs and will go a long way in transforming the lives of women in the District.
Kanungu District LC 5 Chairman Sam Arinaitwe Kajojo noted that he was happy that K16 Galz Network established a training center at a time when there is a high school drop out rate due to Covid 19 and asked the beneficiaries to use the acquired skills to their advantage.
The Training Center at Kanyamisinga has already attracted over 20 women and girls who will undergo skills training after which they will become Trainers of Trainees (ToT).

The virtual event was also attended by the Deputy RDC Kanungu District Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju, the representative of Rotary Club of Kihihi Erasmus Twishime, the selected Sub County women council chairpersons led by the District Women Council Chairperson Anne Mwesigye Kinanga, District Councilors and K16 Galz Network members from Kampala.
Uganda Industrial Research Institute is a government parastatal organization under the auspices of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MoSTI).

It was established by an Act of Parliament in 2002 is a competence and capability centre that champions innovations, translates applied research results into practical applications that lead to high quality efficient industrial products, processes and creates highly skilled human resources.
