An operation by four officers from Chemelil police station on Monday, December 13, turned sour after they engaged with irate residents in Muhoroni, Kisumu County – a situation which left one civilian dead and four others nursing gunshot wounds.Reports indicate that the police officers had raided a shop within the county, looking to flush out the suspects selling tobacco. The altercation ensued after one of the officers roughed up the wife of one of the suspects as they combed through the business. In a matter of minutes, an irate mob had descended upon the shop with the residents baying for the officers’ blood.Fearing for their lives, the officers locked themselves inside the shop. However, efforts to lock the mob out proved futile as the residents speared three of the four officers and managed to open the door.The police officers retaliated by opening fire on the crowd in order to disperse the mob- a situation that left one civilian dead. A number of tear gas canisters were also fired as the officers escaped death by a whisker.Muhoroni OCPD David Muniu confirmed the incident, noting that the situation was restored after backup arrived at the scene.He affirmed that three of the officers were injured with spear wounds while four civilians were also left with gunshot wounds. They were rushed to Nandi Hills Sub County Hospital for treatment.”In the process of rescuing the officers, several rounds of ammunition and tear gas canister were expended.
