Police in the Nyakach area of Kisumu County were on Saturday recalled from their annual leave to tackle increased cases of banditry in the area.
This new development came after security agencies were given a shoot-to-kill order as the bandit situation in the area escalated to unprecedented levels.
Nyakach Deputy County Commissioner Job Adunda gave the directive on Saturday, December 14, as he admitted that the directive was prompted by the incessant cattle rustling which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives.
“They are intent on killing our people and taking our livestock. We have said, and we have given instructions to our security officers, to shoot to kill those who are armed and have the intent to kill innocent people,” the Deputy County Commissioner said.

In Kisumu East, four robbery suspects were apprehended after a sting operation, with detectives recovering several items whose value has not been made public.
The four, who are being detained at the Kasagam Police Station, are helping police with investigations.
Crimes in the Kisumu East area have taken an alarming twist with one suspect getting attacked and killed in his home in the Ngege area in Nyakach Sub-County.
His death is believed to be the work of bandits because an arrow was found lodged on the right side of his head and another one in the stomach. No livestock from his homestead was stolen.
The victim was allegedly attacked for trying to tackle the vice by reporting it to authorities.
One Nyakach resident welcomed the shoot-to-kill order but urged authorities to keep their word in the fight against banditry.
At the volatile Kisumu-Kericho border, there is a heavy police presence, particularly during the festive period as security agencies have been urged to deal ruthlessly with anyone suspected of being involved in cattle rustling.
With officers recalled from leave, the security operation is set to extend to other parts of the country to boost security ahead of the festive period.
