Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos has revoked the appointment of Joel Kibe as a member of the Council of the University of Nairobi.
In a gazette notice dated December 13, the CS stated that the revocation would take effect immediately.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 36 (1) (d) of the Universities Act, 2012 as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, *revokes the appointment of— Joel Kibe as a member of the Council of the University of Nairobi, with effect from the 13th December, 2024,” the notice read.
The reason for the revocation was, however, not indicated and added a new web to the contentious leadership of the council and the university in general.

The former Business Council’s National Chairperson was appointed into the position just over a year ago on October 9, 2023.
A month ago, the UON council was involved in a tussle with the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) over the appointment of a top director who is the university’s acting Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The EACC believed that the director, who had been appointed four months prior by the council, was not suitable for the position and also that the COO position the COO holds was not created per applicable law.
“The tenure of the official as acting Chief Operations Officer at the University of Nairobi is irregular,” read a part of the statement sent by EACC to the university council.
They also added that the university where the appointee purportedly attended was not accredited in Kenya.
“The Commission on University Education (CUE) confirmed that, as of 2003, under the provisions of criteria for accreditation Rule 14 of the Universities Rules, Pontifical Urbaniana University (PUU) was not an accredited institution in Kenya and therefore the certificate awarded by PUU is not recognized in Kenya,” the letter read in part.
However, the council defied these concerns and instead extended the COO’s contract for six months, thereby providing the EACC with more time to gather evidence to support their assertions.
