Quex, a recording and performing singer, expressed dissatisfaction with the Uganda Performing Rights Society (UPRS) over a Shs40k royalty payment.Speaking in an interview, the ”Kachumbali” hitmaker narrated how his visit to the UPRS offices left him frustrated when he inquired about his royalties and was told he had Shs40k as his annual payment.Quex said that his music plays almost everywhere and he finds the royalties rather “unfair.” He requested UCC to help artists against such exploitation.I dropped one of the hottest songs in Uganda but when I went to UPRS I was offered only Shs40k yet my song was played everywhere. It felt unfair yet on the list, there were artists with payments of millions which wasn’t making sense at all.He also shared his views about having record labels saying he commends them so much since they have impacted the rise of new artists but criticized the bad contracts that they make artists sign.Music record labels have importance and have impacted our industry as you can see what Swangz Avenue has done. They have done something different that is commendable and we have to applaud them. The only thing I can criticize about record labels is the bad contracts that they make artists sign.
