Eddy Kenzo has reassured media houses that the new copyright royalty system will be fair and affordable. Speaking to journalists about the upcoming Copyright Management System and amendments to the copyright bill, Kenzo said that television and radio stations will be required to pay an annual fee for the music they use.He dismissed concerns that artists are trying to exploit the media, explaining that the fees will be reasonable. They are going to be paying per year. They will, let’s say, tell you to pay Shs 200,000 for music, unless you’re just stingy. Kenzo also noted that music distributors will ensure fair distribution of royalties based on listenership. He assured that no media house will be burdened with excessive payments, as licensing has always existed, and previous fees were not exorbitant.Addressing concerns about the implementation of the new system, Kenzo stated that there will be ongoing sensitization efforts to ensure a smooth transition. No one is going to be asked to bring large sums of money because the licensing has existed and they weren’t paying a lot either, so there’s no need to be afraid.
