The newest Ugandan Political Party, National Unity Platform is under fire for segregating against people due to their religious affiliations. According to documents making round on social media, singer Joseph Mayanja, alias Jose Chameleone was dumped for being Catholic in favor of Latif Sebagala, a Muslim.
A score card used to vet all candidates, indicates that Chameleone stood a higher chance of losing as compared to Latif, due to their religious affiliations. Latif scored 8/10 when it came to religion, with comments indicating that Islam is a denomination relevant to majority voters. On the other hand, Chameleone scored 3/10, with comments indicating that he is a Catholic and that denomination is not appealing to the majority voters.Several Ugandans have since taken to social media to call out the new party, explaining that segregating against people due to their religious affiliations is wrong and should not be tolerated.Chameleone also lost the popularity vote to Latif when he scored 4/10 for having what they termed as “little voter confidence.” On the category of name, he also lost with a 3/10, indicating that without the name Chameleone, the candidate is not recognizable. However, Latif is a recognized and trusted politician in whom people have confidence of drawing a good leader.Joseph Mayanja, aka Chameleone left the Democratic Party to join NUP, formerly known as People Power. He sought the Lord Mayoral ticket but the same was handed to Latif Ssebagala a former MP. It remains unclear whether Chameleone will remain in NUP and support the party’s favored candidate, or if he will return to DP and request for the same ticket. The singer, is yet to speak out.
