Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Brig. Flavia Byekwaso, has confirmed that security has former President of the National Unity Platform – NUP, Moses Nkonge Kibalama in custody, but was quick to add that it is for his own safety. While addressing the media on Friday, Brig. Byekwaso argued that that other security agencies were holding Kibalama for his own safety but insisted the UPDF is not involved in the operation. She told the press that security agencies have credible information that there were people who wanted to harm Kibakama, hence the presence of soldiers at his premises.
Byekwaso added that there were intelligence reports that indicated threats on his life and planned violence to his premises, forcing deployment of security guards protecting his premises.Reports emerged two days ago indicating that soldiers had surrounded Kibalama’s residence in Nansana municipality and had taken him to an unknown location with his known cellphone switched off. However, Byewkaso declined to disclose the actual nature of threat, saying that the security was holding Kibalama in order to give him maximum security. On Thursday, a video made rounds on social media showing Kibalama denouncing Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, to whom he sold UNRP, which is now known as NUP. In the video, Kibalama said Kyagulanyi had failed to meet his part of the bargain, claiming he had been promised USD 5 million but none of this has materialized.
