The National Unity Platform flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayoral seat, Hajj Latif Ssebagala has stepped down from the race, citing the need to maintain unity for the good of the opposition. He leaves just moments after fellow legislator and NUP member, Betty Nambooze Bakireke openly made it clear that she would not endorse his bid despite subscribing to the same denomination.

His resignation comes just a day after he has been announced as the official flag bearer of the NUP party. Sources say, there was boiling tension within the Muslim fraternity which compelled him to step down. A proposal by Kampala central MP, Muhammad Nsereko tasking him to join EALA is said to have played a big role in today’s sudden decision.
In his justification remarks, Latiff a Muslim like his opponent Erias Lukwago says he will remain loyal to NUP but won’t contest for Lord Mayor. “I remain a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and will still give all my support to Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu for the presidency.”
Latiff Ssebaggala Sengendo has served the Kawempe North constituency since 2001 when he joined parliament. He was rated among the best performers of the tenth parliament. He leaves a legacy unmatched in Kawempe where he will be celebrated through his school bursaries for the poor and charity projects in the community.
