The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has awarded the second batch of scholarships to 10 students, four of whom are female and six male in a bid to enable them pursue the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA-U) qualification.
The beneficiaries, according to ICPAU officials, are fresh university graduates selected from both public and private universities.
The winners of the second batch of the Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA-U) scholarships obtained either a First Class or Second Class Upper degrees to qualify.
ICPAU scholarship will cover a bigger potion of the course costs including registration, annual studentship renewal, study materials and examinations whereas beneficiaries will meet their tuition, NCHE fees and transport among others.
Making her remarks at the second students scholarship cohort unveiling held Thursday, CPA Gloria Wakooba Tuhaise, the Director Glory Consultants and Professional Trainers Limited, pledged to cover tuition fees for the four female students.
“In tandem with the spirit of the International Women’s Day which is fast approaching, Glory Consultants and Professional Trainers will cover the tuition costs for the 4 female beneficiaries,” Tuhaise said.
The students are expected to write their first CPA-U examinations in June 2021 and they are to complete the course within two and ahalf years.
In his keynote address, CPA Stephen Muchelule, a member of ICPAU who was recognised as the top student in Integration of Knowledge (Paper 18) of the November 2019 CPA-U examinations diet, advised the students to plan ahead and prepare adequately so as to complete the course within the stipulated time.
He further advised the students to continuously recall why they selected the course.
“You need to understand the reason why you selected CPA,” CPA Muchelule said adding, “there is no other alternative, because in order to become a CPA, you must be a member of ICPAU and you need CPA, in order to qualify for membership,” he said.
The scholarships selection process began in May 2020, with an invite for applications. Among the criteria, applicants were required to have completed their bachelors’ degrees between October 2019 – March 2020 and hold an Honours Degree (1st Class or second class – upper division).
Mr. John Bosco Ntangaare, the Director Education advised the scholarship winners who are actively employed to begin recording their practical experience immediately, through the ICPAU Practical Experience Training (PET) programme, to enhance their eligibility for ICPAU full membership.
Section 5 (2) of the Accountants Act, 2013 stipulates that a person is eligible for ICPAU membership if he/she passes the qualifying examinations and completes the requisite practical training.
The 8th President of ICPAU, CPA Frederick Kibbedi, advised the students to aim at acquiring new skills including digital, analytical, risk analysis and problem solving, in order to be competitive.
The CPA-U scholarship programme was introduced in 2019 as part of ICPAU’s commitment towards nurturing talent among young people, in this case through giving university graduates the opportunity to build on their initial professional development by acquiring professional knowledge, skills and values.
