The Electoral Commission has increased the number of symbols to be used by independent candidates from 10 to 20.The commission said this will enable independent candidates have a variety of symbols from which they can choose in the 2020/21 general election.The new symbols include; mobile phone, television, tree, house, boat, candle, bunch of matooke, motor vehicle, loudspeaker and Jerrycan.The original batch of symbols were; bicycle, pot, clock , chair , saucepan, table, cup, radio, kettle and a ball.EC’s acting spokesperson Paul Bukenya affirmed that all symbols are accorded to the candidates at no cost and thus cautioned independent candidates not to dare pay to be designated a particular symbol.“We do not sell symbols, they are issued to aspirants on a first come and first serve basis,” Bukenya emphasised.The 20 symbols will complement the customised symbols for political parties such as the bus for NRM, a hoe for DP, palm for UPC, weighing scale for JEEMA, the key for FDC and an Umbrella for National Unity Platform.
