The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of a section of Waiyaki Way in Nairobi due to the construction of the Nairobi Expressway. In a notice dated Saturday, September 26, KeNHA stated that the closure of the section would affect other motorists in Nairobi, especially those travelling along Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway.The authority stated that 500 metres of Waiyaki Way from Goodman Tower to Sanlam Tower would be closed from Saturday, September 26, 2020, to April 1, 2021.Motorists travelling from City Centre were asked to head towards James Gichuru Road, turn left into Service Road located before St Mark’s Footbridge to rejoin Waiyaki Way after Mvuki Road. Motorists pictured along Waiyaki Way on Thursday, October 17, 2019Kenyans.co.ke KeNHA also urged pedestrians to use the allocated pedestrian crossing points in front of Park Inn Hotel.“Motorists are further requested to follow directions as shall be indicated on the road signage provided, and/or by traffic marshals on site.“We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused as we endeavour to improve the existing infrastructure along this critical section of the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway (A8 Road),” KeNHA Director General Engineer Peter Mundinia stated.On Thursday, September 24, Kenya Power also announced intermittent power interruptions for estates located along the Expressway corridor, as the company commenced the relocation of power lines between Mlolongo, Mombasa Road and James Gichuru Road The transfer of cables is aligned with the construction of the Nairobi Expressway, which starts at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and ends at Waiyaki Way. It assured the residents that it is keen on completing this exercise with minimal interruptions to power supply. “The Company is planning to minimise power interruptions by leveraging the Live Line Maintenance technology which will relocate most of the lines without switching off supply.”We aim to keep the lights on even as we carry out this critical exercise. Where it will be inevitable to switch off supply, we are scheduling interruptions and communicating the plan to customers,” Kenya Power Managing Director & CEO, Bernard Ngugi stated.
