Kampala Lord Mayor aspirant, Joseph Mayanja alias Dr. Chameleone has disputed the outcome of the National Unity Platform party Electoral Management Committee which over the weekend pronounced Kawempe North MP, Latif Ssebaggala credible to hold the flag.

Chameleone says he will now bank on his fame and popularity among lovers of his music to go ahead and run for the seat. A distressed Mayanja says he is a sworn member of the People Power movement and a staunch believer of the Bobi Wine ideology. “I have been pro-People Power all the way. We want change, the flag can’t go to the same faces who have served. Latiff has been MP for 20 years,” Chameleone said. “I am to communicate the way forward in the midst of the week. I’m consulting my taskforce and people will know my next take. But ne assured, I will return as independent,” he added.
The National Unity Platform party vetting committee says it considered a span of factors to resolve on specific candidates. A source we spoke to in the NUP committee says one of the reasons the legendary music icon was dropped is the fact that he is unpredictable and also lacks the vigour to appeal to the Kampala electorate which is widely Muslim dominated. “Chameleone is not appealing. We wanted a candidate who would easily push on our agenda for change. Chameleone is not that person,” says the NUP elections committee member. “Kampala voters want a person who is knowledgeable enough to work on their matters,” he added.
Also our sources have learnt that the Kawempe South MP aspirant, Roy Ssemboga is among those considering to contest as independents in case the committee does not give them flags. The former Makerere Guild President on Friday vowed to stand as an independent should the NUP High command deny him the party ticket for the Kawempe South race. Our highly trusted sources say that NUP already tipped journalist Kazibwe Bashir Mbaziira whom according to the NUP intelligence is more popular on ground and putting into consideration the religious factor where Kawempe is mostly dominated by Muslims.
