The defending champions, City Oilers, took a crucial 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven final series against KIU Titans in the National Basketball League, winning game one 70-61 at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Wednesday evening.
The Oilers dominated the first half, establishing a three-point lead (19-16) in the opening period and extending it to eight points (37-29) by halftime.
However, the KIU Titans staged a comeback in the third period, narrowing the deficit to just one point (51-50).
Despite the Titans’ resurgence, City Oilers maintained their composure, with Stanley Mugerwa’s jump shot sealing the victory as the Titans trailed by nine points at the final buzzer.
Parish Petty (20 points), Malual Dier (15 points), and Fayed Baale (12 points) led the City Oilers’ scoring charge, while Titus Lual pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds. Peter Obleng (20 points) and Ivan Lumanyika (10 points) paced the KIU Titans’ offense, but their efforts were insufficient to secure a win.
In the ladies’ finals, UCU Lady Canons took game one with a 71-66 victory over JKL Lady Dolphins, drawing first blood in their series.
