Construction work to improve the Busia Health Centre IV facility has commenced in Busia Municipality.
The 700 million shillings building project is being built at Busia’s health center IV located at Solo ‘C’ village in Western division.
The project is being funded by Busia Municipal council using the budget allocation of primary health care -PHC funds and co-funded by World Vision Uganda Busia branch and the construction work will take two years.
According to the design, the building will comprise of a maternity ward, operating theatre, children’s ward and staff quarters for the medics attached to Busia health center IV.
The phased construction is contracted to JEMHASO Enterprises Limited. Moses Ogwal, the site engineer from JEHMHASO says that they have started with construction of the slab in the first phase which they will leave to set for a two weeks period, then start erecting the rest of the structure.
Hassan Bwire Opio, the Mayor Busia town says that with the budget allocated for the construction is from PHC funds and they hope with support from world vision, the project will be completed in time to solve the problem of insufficient space at the facility.The new building will have three sections, the lower, middle and upper sections that according to the plan will avail enough space in the health facility.
Josephine Apio, a resident of Mugungu A village says that most mothers had started shunning the facility due to insufficient space at the maternity ward and the currently available labor room being way below standard. Apio applauded the authorities for coming with up the project and appealed to the contractors to speed up the work.
Grace Akirapa another resident from Dabani sub-county says that many women who trek from the sub-county which is almost 8 kilometers to access health service at Busia health center four, always get disappointed by the inadequate space yet the health facility has good medics who can skillfully service delivery.
Faziira Namugaya, an expectant mother who talked to our reporter says that she is feeling labor pain and she has resorted to sleep on the varanda of the maternity ward because the room is small and there were four other mothers in the labor room so the maternity ward is too small.
Dr. Yusuf Lule, the medical superintendent of Busia Health Center four says that the project will solve the challenge that has for long caused public outcry of insufficient space, and also the medical staff shall be in position to stay within so that they improve on service delivery at the facility.
