The Forum for Democratic Change has expressed concern over police’s failure to release reports regarding the causes of the fires that have led to loss of people’s lives and property.
Speaking to the reporters at the party headquarters, the party’s deputy spokesperson, John Kikonyogo, said that fire outbreaks are becoming common in the country with schools and markets being the main targets.
He tasked the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola, to release the reports of the previous fires with immediate effect.
“You remember the Kasubi tombs, the Kanungu massacre…that was one of the biggest incidents we have ever had.You remember Budo Junior and Napier market fire in Jinja? Why is the police not releasing the reports?”he queried.
He noted the party believes that police have the capacity to handle all these incidents but it seems there are some people who are frustrating its work.
“Who is not interested in the release of these reports? How can a historical building like this one of Makerere University have no fire sensors?”he wondered.
FDC proposed a fund-raising drive to rebuild the Makerere University main building, a building of international heritage, that was extensively damaged by the inferno.
He also demanded for unconditional release of Dr Stella Nyanzi.
Nyanzi, who is the FDC’s candidate for Kampala Woman MPs seat, was arrested with other members on Sunday in Busia for allegedly trying to sneak out of the country.
