The students team from Gulu University that outcompeted other African Universities to represent Africa in the final of the Geneva Challenge for social inclusion have emerged fifth best in the global ranking with their project ‘Vertical Farming in Refugees Settings’.
This follows the Virtual award announcement on Tuesday the 6th of October from Geneva.
The team that held high the flag of Gulu University and Africa included Nelson Papi Kolliesuah; Monique Mededode Sognigbe, Marveen Nafula, Iyaloo Nghinaalo Sheyavali, Aaron Ekipetot Nanok all pursuing Masters of Science of Food Security and Community Nutrition in the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment.
“We are very excited that we held the entire continents’ flag but most importantly we appreciate very much the support we received from our faculty during all these process that had started three months ago,” excited Papi Nelson revealed.
The Gulu University team will also receive a cash prize worth 2,500 Swiss francs about UGX 10 million.
Harvard University (USA) was the first, followed by Stockholm School of Economics and Royal Institute (Sweden) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India).
In the ranking also Universidad National de la Plata (Argentina); University of Geneva and Unversidad de Chile in South America tied in the fourth place.
According to Associate professor Duncan Ongeng, Coordinator, TAGDEV programme at Gulu University the student’s demonstration of competency is a clear indication of the quality competitiveness of graduate training programmes at Gulu University.
“What those students accomplished is exactly in line with the aspirations of the “Transforming African Agricultural Universities to meaningfully contribute to Africa’s growth and development-TAGDEV” programme which is supporting their studies in Gulu University”.
The TAGDEV programme aims at producing competitive graduates that are responsive to social needs of the society and is being funded by the MasterCard Foundation through RUFORUM.
