American poet, essayist, Criss Jami once said: “Grudges are for those who insist that they are owed something; forgiveness, however, is for those who are substantial enough to move on.”That’s exactly what musician Jose Chameleone seems to have done. He has moved on with his political ambitions after the National Unity Platform (NUP) led by his brother in music, Bobi Wine, rejected his bid to carry the party flag in the 2021 election for Kampala Mayoral seat.NUP rejected Chameleone partly because his academic papers were questionable, and opted for Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Latif Ssebagala who days later pulled out of the race. After his nomination as an Independent candidate for mayoral race on Wednesday, Chameleone said he still supports the Kyadondo East MP, real name Robert Kyagulanyi in his campaign to unseat veteran leader Yoweri Museveni, 76, although he (Chamemeleone) also has his personal ambitions. “I was rejected for this race but my supporters said they want me to lead them. I still support Bobi Wine but I also have my personal ambitions. I want you to know that whoever stands in my way will face the power of people,” Chameleone told journalists at the electoral commission regional offices in Ntinda where he, Eriasa Lukwago of the FDC and Nabilah Naggayi Sempala who was chosen to replace Ssebagala in NUP were nominated from. I decided to defy the party to come as an Independent after I was denied a card for NUP…The city is not looking for an Opposition leader. It needs a capable leader who will be able to promote development and come up with strategies to create jobs for the youths,” he added.
