Parliament should compel government to pay 10 billion Shillings support for political activities since most of them are currently struggling to operate.Political parties claim they have not got the money for two years now despite it having been appropriated by Parliament. 10 billion Shillings funding is distributed annually to the Political parties under the Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) depending on their representation in Parliament is enshrined in the Political Parties and Organizations (Amendment) Act. NRM which has the highest number of MPs in the house gets the largest share followed by FDC, DPC, UPC and JEEMA respectively.Government recently argues that a shift in priorities like fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic has caused the delay in giving funds to the political parties. However, IPOD through its representation in Parliament has asked Parliament to compel Government to pay this money. Asuman Basalirwa, the chairperson of IPOD and President of Justice Forum (JEEMA) raised the matter of national importance on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, claiming that he has been approached by the top political parties who have not received funding for the last two years and yet the political activities are now intense.According to Basalirwa, the funds are meant to facilitate political parties in their electoral activities, but to date, Government has not explained why the money has not come as per the law.Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga the Speaker of Parliament, has tasked the Finance Ministry to answer why this money has not been provided to date.
