Following a tragic incident on February 26, in which a man set himself ablaze near Parliament, he has succumbed to his injuries.
The man identified as Benjamin Agaba, died on Sunday evening at Kiruddu Referral Hospital.
Agaba, a former supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who later switched his allegiance to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), had been allegedly openly struggling with severe financial hardships and a lack of support from both the government and political parties.
Agaba’s act of self-immolation near the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs on Parliamentary Avenue shocked the nation. His friends revealed that he had reached out to several government offices, including the NRM Secretariat, seeking financial assistance, but his pleas went unanswered.
Before his switch to the NRM, Agaba had composed songs for President Museveni’s campaigns, hoping for recognition or support in return.
Agaba’s personal life was also marred by the consequences of his political defection. His former NUP colleagues allegedly retaliated violently, attacking his home and injuring him, while also burning down his father’s house. Agaba’s father, a resident of Gomba District also reportedly disowned him.
The NRM’s Director of Communication, Emmanuel Dombo while commenting on Agaba’s plight, prior to his demise said:
“We receive many support requests daily, and unfortunately, not everyone can be attended to immediately. However, we are following up on Benjamin’s case and will ensure it is addressed properly,” Dombo assured.
