State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo has advised parents to take their children to Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools if they cannot afford school fees in private schools.
Muyingo also warned government schools that are hiking school fees and directed parents on where to report in case of any increase in school fees.
Muyingo revealed that Ministry of Education and Sports laid a procedure which headteachers must follow before increasing school fees adding that every school has a Board of Governors that they can always reach out to for advice and after coming to agreement, the board should be able to report to the concerned persons in the Ministry of Education to get permission to increase fees.
“Schools are not allowed to increase fees. If there be need to increase, school owners have to first engage parents to explain to them and to seek permission from them,” he said.
“If any school increases school fees without passing through that procedure, it is to be punished,” Muyingo said.
Muyingo further urged parents to report any cases of school fees increase but also enroll their children to UPE and USE where they can afford the little.
