The Deputy Registrar Crimes War Division of the High Court Beatrice Atim has allocated the murder, terrorism and attempted murder pre-trial file against Kawempe North legislator Muhammad Ssegirinya and Makindye West’s Allan Ssewanyana to Justice Alice Komuhangi replacing Justice Elizabeth Jane Alividza who was transferred to the High Court Lands Division.
Before being appointed as the Judge of the High Court, Justice Komuhangi was a prosecutor in the office of the Director Public Prosecution (DPP) and she was the one who led the prosecution of Sarah Nabikolo, wife to late Eria Bugembe Ssebunya alias Kasiwukira.
In Segirinya and Ssewanyana’s pre-trial, Justice Komuhangi’s role will be to prepare the file to guide the panel of 3 justices who are going to handle the main trial.
Justice Komuhangi is expected to handle applications on the file including the bail application filed by the accused’s lawyers led by Caleb Alaka and Erias Lukwago, the Kampala city Lord Mayor.
She is also going to handle incarcerated lawyer Hassan Male Mabirizi’s application seeking an order of staying the trial of the accused legislators until his petition before the Constitutional Court is determined.
Prosecution led by Lino Anguzo also filed an application seeking an order of protecting a number of prosecution star witnesses.
The pre-trial hearing is expected to kick off on 28th September, 2022 as adjourned last month by Atim.
State alleges that the accused persons masterminded the deadly murders in greater Masaka where 28 elderly people were killed.
State also claims the motive of the killings was to incite locals against president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s government.
All the accused persons denied the allegations claiming that they are politically motivated.
