The ruling National Resistance Movement, NRM Party has started hearing the electoral petitions arising from the recently concluded Party Primaries. The party Legal Director, Oscar Kihika told a press conference on Sunday that handling of the electoral petitions was completed on Saturday and that the team immediately started meeting petitioners in a process that will end on 4th October.Hearing of the petitions is currently taking place at Plot 13 NRM Electoral Commission from 9am to 1pm daily. He said petitioners are expected to appear in person.
According to Kihika, the party is handling 485 petitions for Parliamentary primaries and have completed over 80 LCV chairpersons and councilors, over 125 LC3 and mayors were also handled last week.“We have segmented the petitions in regions, starting from Lango and Kigezi sub-regions and we shall handle each region on the stated dates as announced in the newspapers” Kihika said.The Party’s Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba also assured the media that the issue of elections violence is being handled by the legal team and that all those who violated the laws will be brought to justice.On Mawogola South and Mawogola North constituencies, Lumumba noted that the elections have further been postponed to 30th September. “The elections were postponed to enable voters, candidates and electoral officials to organize so that we don’t get the same intimidations and violence” the SG said.
