The National Unity Platform (NUP) on Thursday announced a probe into some party officials who have been implicated in money scandals and extortion from candidates. This follows a series of complaints raised by different candidates who accuse the party officials on the vetting committee to be asking for money in exchange for party flag. In Jinja, the area NUP registrar, Saul Nsongambi was arrested on Monday for extorting from candidates sums between UGX 500,000 and 1,000,000.

Also implicated is the coordinator of the informal sector who is currently vying for the Kampala central MP seat, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu. Several aspirants accuse him of extorting from them money before issuing party flags. However, in a Thursday presser Fred Nyanzi rubbished the claims and urged any complaint to come out with evidence. In his defence, Nyanzi described himself as a rich man who even funds the struggle with his own resources. Nyanzi said he is a deeply rooted businessman who has reaped himself a fortune from and therefore cannot at any point extort from candidates as widely alleged by runours on social media acclaims.

The party spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi says all those allegations will be affirmed if substantial proof is adduced by the aggrieved parties. “What I can say is that nobody has extorted money from any aspirant in terms of selling the party flag or anything thing of that nature. The allegations are not true,” Ssenyonyi said yesterday. “Those with evidence should bring because such information will help us to deal with the question of corruption. Wewant to get to the bottom of these things, there might be something,”he stressed.
