Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama has said that National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s Ojok Andrew was duly nominated and is eligible to contest in Omoro by-election to replace his father.
This comes after Alliance for National Tranformation (ANT) candidate Kizza Oscar challenged candidate, Ojok Andrew Oulanyah ahead of Omoro by-elections.
In a complaint to the Electoral Commission (EC), Kizza said that Ojok has different names on his National ID and academic papers yet he continues to use the name “Oulanyah.”
“I wish to lodge and register my complaint against the purported nomination of the person the NRM presented as a candidate called Ojok Andrew Oulanyah,” the petition read.
He further noted that the person nominated as ‘Ojok Andrew Oulanyah’ does not exist and has no academic qualifications.
Having learned about Kizza’s complaint, EC chairperson confirmed that Ojok was duly nominated with other candidates and they are eligible for election to the position of Member of Parliament representing the people of Omoro County.
He also revealed that EC has concluded hearing of complaints that were raised in respect of ineligibility of the six candidates.
“In exercise of its powers as provided for under Article 61(1)(f) of the Constitution and Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act 140, the EC has concluded hearing of complaints that were raised in espect of ineligibility of the six candidates for Omoro County MP By-election.”
The Commission upheld the decision of the Returning Officer, Omoro District in nominating the candidates and they remain duly nominated candidates in the Parliamentary by-election, with the polling set for Thursday 26th May 2022.
Omoro by-election attracted six candidates. They include; Onen Jimmy Walter (IND), Odonga Terence (IND), Tolit Simon Akecha (NUP), Kizza Oscar (ANT), Ojok Andrew Oulanyah (NRM) and Odong Justine (FDC).
