Reports jetting in indicate that the Elgon Regional Field Force Unit Commandant Samuel Okirol, who commanded the August crackdown on National Unity Platform party supporters has passed on today. Okirol is said to have died at Embargo clinic in Mbale this Monday morning after battling diabetes and a cocktail of illnesses. Okirol has been at the center of quelling riots in Mbale something that prompted Mbale locals to baptize him a nickname, ‘Afande Teargas’.

Afande Okirol unleashed his vendetta on Bobi Wine when commanded the raid on the Mbale city radio that had hosted the presidential hopeful for a political talk show. He vigorously directed his juniors to fire teargas and live ammunition at cheering Bobi Wine crowds. He would later escort Bobi Wine out of Mbale city where he declared him persona non grata. A stubborn Bobi Wine would eventually go ahead to file a court case challenging his treatment at the radio station where he had adhered to the scientific elections model that urges candidates to use media as a means of conveying their messages. Even at the courtroom, Okirol made it a point to deploy and at times caused fracas to instil fear in Bobi Wine supporters. The latest incident nearly killed one of the NUP supporters called Mugerwa Mark whose chin was tore by a rubber bullet fired by Okirol’s men.
