At least one inmate at Rubanda Government Prison in Rubanda District has tested positive for COVID-19.
The inmate whose names have not been revealed is currently undergoing treatment at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
He was one of 14 inmates who were transferred to Rubanda Prison from Kisoro district on Saturday.
Dr Abdon Birungi, the Rubanda district health officer says that upon receiving information that one of the prisoners was detained at Kisoro police station where a COVID-19 patient was reported last week, they decided to carry out testing for all 14 prisoners who were transferred from Kisoro and one of them tested positive.
Frank Baine, the Uganda Prisons spokesperson said that has not received information about the issue but added that they are ready to contain the spread of the disease.
Uganda has so far confirmed 8,287 COVID-19 positive cases; 4,430 recoveries and 75 deaths as of yesterday.
