Mwesigwa Rukutana
The NRM Electoral Commission has announced State Minister for Labor Hon Mwesigwa Rukutana as the winner of the Rushenyi County Party Primaries.
Dr Tanga Odoi the Commission Chairman announced Wednesday afternoon that after vote recounting, Rukutana had polled 25310 votes against Naomi Kabasharira ‘s 25290.
This translates to 46.3% against 46.2% respectively.
The Rushenyi poll result was cancelled two weeks ago after a petition from the team of State Minister of Labor, Mwesigwa Rukutana stated that Naome Kabasharira was irregularly declared the winner with 24,400 against the former’s 23,966 votes.
Re-tallying of the vote commenced on September 15, 2020, from the NRM election headquarters at Plot 13 Kyadondo. Tanga travelled to Rushenyi on a fact finding mission during the mayoral elections and met with the NRM members.
He reached Nyakahita cell where the result had not been included in the total results. The Nyakahita registrar took off and didn’t announce the result when fierce fighting broke out between Kabasharira and Rukutana supporters.
Rukutana team, in their petition, indicated that in Nyakahita he got 172 votes while Kasharira polled 140. Rukutana team has the declaration form of Nyakahita cell but Kabasharira team reportedly did not pick it in protest.
Rushenyi poll was characterized by violence leading to the arrest and charging of Rukutana with attempted murder, stealing a gun and other charges.
