Two children have burnt to death in a house fire in Amuru district. The victims are two-year-old Pius Komagum and 2- months-old Agenorwot, both children of Geoffrey Opiro and Irene Akot. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at Kata Tye Village in Layima Sub County Amuru district.
Apollo Okello, the Amuru District Education and Health Secretary, says the minors were sleeping in a makeshift grass-thatched structure while their parents were away in the neighbourhood. He says the family that had just settled in the area was in the process of building a decent house.
Emmanuel Bwambale, the Amuru District Police Commander confirmed the incident saying that investigations into the cause of the fire have started. It is a common practice by farmers in Amuru district and other rural areas in Northern Uganda to burn bushes for cultivations during the dry season. Hunters also do the same in search of edible wild animals.
