What is at stake following a fire that gutted Makerere’s iconic Ivory Tower

Saturday night will forever remain in the minds of all the people that have an attachment to Makerere University in one way or the other after a strong fire gutted the main building (the Ivory Tower) of Uganda’s largest and oldest University, Makerere University.The fire is said to have started at around 1:00AM.The building holds the office of the University’s Vice Chancellor,Prof Barnabas Nawangwe and as though that is not enough, the building also holds student records while the basement is full of archive files that contain the entire history of the institution.The Main Building was completed in 1941 under the leadership of Mr. George C. Turner, Principal, Makerere College (1939-46).Earlier in 1938, the Duke of Gloucester, representing His Majesty King George VI had cut the first sod for the construction of the building on 3rd Nov.<br>The Main Building has a unique 20th century British architecture which easily makes it Makerere's most recognisable symbol and was constructed with funds from the Colonial Development bourse. The building's construction was greatly delayed by a scarcity of resources to purchase materials which was later overcame to set up the building.The building’s left wing is custody to the Human Resource and staff records of the university spanning to the years the university has lived.<br>Details to follow…<br><br clear="all">
