Ugandan comedian Kapere has accused fellow comedian and show promoter Alex Muhangi of denying him opportunities to perform, despite his long-standing presence in the comedy industry.
During a recent media interview, Kapere expressed frustration with Muhangi, whom he described as greedy and unwilling to support struggling comedians.
Muhangi, who is the organiser of the popular weekly comedy show Comedy Store, was criticised by Kapere for allegedly failing to give him a chance to perform on the platform. “I’m not happy at all. What hurts me most is that we don’t wish others well. Is it because I’m ugly or because I do not add anything to you?” Kapere said.
He further claimed that many talented comedians from disadvantaged backgrounds are being overlooked because established figures in the industry are unwilling to give them opportunities.
“You maltreat the poor; there are very many young talents down in the ghetto who have amazing work but cannot get the chance because the people who have made a name for themselves in the industry don’t want to give us money,” he added.
According to Kapere, this is not the first time he has publicly criticised Muhangi. He said he has previously appeared on several media platforms to express his disappointment but has not received any response.
Kapere also referenced veteran comedian Amooti Omubalanguzi, noting that during his time performing at Wallet Pub, he offered opportunities to many comedians, including Muhangi. “Amooti, during his days at Wallet Pub, didn’t leave you out because he gave you opportunities on stage. They helped you too, but now that you are big, you are undermining your fellow comedians,” Kapere said.
He further revealed that he once pleaded with Muhangi for a chance to perform, even kneeling before him, but his request was rejected. “I knelt before you, begging for a chance to work with you to better my life, but you refused. You want me to first die before you do anything?” he said.
Kapere added that he no longer expects help from Muhangi and warned him not to show sympathy after his death. “Don’t ever condole me when I’m dead, and I don’t need your money then,” he said.
