Tems has made Billboard Hot 100 history, as her hit song “What You Need” reaches 30 weeks on the US chart and sets a new longevity record for a solo song by an African act.
The Nigerian singer, whose full name is Temilade Openiyi, has surpassed the previous 29-week benchmark shared by South African singer Tyla’s “Water” and Nigerian singer CKay’s “Love Nwantiti.”
The milestone adds another achievement to Tems’ growing international career, with “What You Need” maintaining a lengthy run on one of the music industry’s most closely watched singles charts.
The song has peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, while its continued chart presence has helped it outlast the previous African solo-song record holders.
Beyond the Hot 100, “What You Need” has also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Adult R&B Airplay charts.
The record marks another major chart achievement for Tems, whose music continues to reach audiences beyond Nigeria and across the international music market.
