Over the weekend at Motiv Bugolobi, Nakato Bridget Prudence was crowned Miss Uganda West Nile, closing out a regional search that turned months of preparation and hometown pride into one unforgettable night. Her win sends her straight to the Miss Uganda Grand Finale on October 10, where one woman will be crowned Miss Uganda 2026 and earn the right to represent the country at Miss World.

Young women from across West Nile, a region long known for producing some of Uganda’s finest honey. They travelled from their communities to take part, each hoping to carry her hometown’s name onto the national stage.

Powered by V&A Sherry, the West Nile leg of the Miss Uganda journey was one for the books, unfolding across a V&A party with the queens, auditions, and the grand finale itself. At every stage, the contestants shared a little more of themselves, and the region showed up to celebrate them for it.

On finale night, each contestant told the judges what she would stand for if she won. Their causes ranged from mental health awareness to body advocacy and girl-child education, among others; deeply personal choices that said as much about each woman as her poise on stage did. Every walk, every word, every flash of personality gave the audience an opportunity to see women speaking plainly about who they were and what they cared about.

That spirit is exactly what V&A Sherry set out to celebrate, says Roy Ronald Tumwizere, Brand Manager for V&A Sherry at Uganda Breweries Limited.

Between rounds, performances by artists straight from West Nile filled Motiv Bugolobi, turning every pause in the competition into a pocket of pure celebration. The night built toward a headline set from legendary artist Jackie Chandiru, who had the crowd singing along to Blu 3 classics such as “Nsanyuka Nawe” and “Where You Are,” before closing out with solo favourites like “Gold Digger” which had guests reminiscing on an era when music was both lyrical and tune gold.

By the time the judges were ready to announce the results, the room was thick with nerves. Every name called sent a ripple through the crowd, tension breaking into cheers that said everything about how much the night meant to those who had come out to support their own.

The winners were: Nakato Bridget Prudence who was crowned Miss Uganda WestNile, Asianzu Sophie who was the 1st Runner-Up and Taneta Catherine Melish who was crowned 2nd Runner-Up

As West Nile’s winner, Nakato Bridget Prudence now advances automatically to the Miss Uganda Grand Finale on October 10 at Sheraton Kampala Hotel, where she will compete for the national crown and the chance to represent Uganda at Miss World. Two regional legs remain on the tour that is, Western and Central where more young women will soon step into the spotlight, hoping to earn their own place at the Grand Finale.

The line-up includes Axarya, Discreet Street x Local, Good Fibre, Joan Jade, Kifahari, Kwesh, Lamara, Ofumbi, Shurea Yasmin and Nigeria’s Yemi Shoyemi, showcasing the breadth and diversity of contemporary African design.

Beyond the runway, the experience is designed to connect creativity with opportunity. A retail marketplace, held in collaboration with the Kampala Artisan Market on August 22, will give audiences an opportunity to discover and purchase collections directly from participating designers. The programme will also feature mentorship sessions and panel discussions focused on design, business development, branding and market access.

For Johnnie Walker, the partnership represents the brand’s commitment to creating meaningful platforms for Africa’s creative economy and facilitating exchanges that allow local talent to travel beyond borders.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the Commander-in-Chief of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), today presided over the retirement ceremony of 19 army Generals at State House, Entebbe.

President Museveni congratulated the retiring officers for their contribution to the UPDF and commended them for upholding the values of the force throughout their careers, particularly discipline, patriotism, integrity and commitment to duty.

“First of all, I congratulate the Generals for the great contribution they made to the UPDF. The UPDF and NRM have been able to build security,” President Museveni said.

The President advised the retirees to manage their finances wisely, encouraging them to invest in secure avenues such as treasury bonds, which he said could generate returns without requiring active involvement.

“If you can put Shs600 million and you are getting 15 percent, by the end of the year that is Shs90 million profit,” he said.

President Museveni cautioned the retirees against rushing into ventures that require significant capital, advising them to first consider safer investment options that can generate steady returns.

“What will be safer is simply to put the money where it will earn interest,” he said.

He also encouraged the retirees who already own land to consider goat rearing, noting that goats have a ready market, reproduce quickly and do not require expensive artificial feeds.

“You can rear goats. Can you fail to get buyers? They don’t need artificial feeds. You can have them on a small scale, something simple, safe and sustainable,” he said.

The President further encouraged the retiring officers to place their savings in fixed accounts and use the proceeds to finance other projects, including fish farming and rental housing.

“First plant the seeds where they germinate and use the harvest in other projects,” he said.

President Museveni also urged the retirees to remain committed to their families and communities and to use the experience gained during their military careers to continue supporting society.

The retiring officers include Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina, Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, Maj. Gen. Apollo Kasiita Gowa and Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda.

Others are Brig. Gen. E. Muhanguzi, Brig. Gen. S. Omar, Brig. Gen. F. Zakye, Brig. Gen. FR Akiiki, Brig. Gen. MS Kisame, Brig. Gen. PB Mwesigwe, Brig. Gen. ST Kashure, Brig. Gen. SN Ocan, Brig. Gen. MK Bitimbika, Brig. Gen. C. Bakahumura, Brig. Gen. CK Asiimwe and Brig. Gen. CM Muhindo.

The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding, noted that the retiring officers had made significant contributions to the transformation of the UPDF and the maintenance of peace and security through their discipline and commitment to duty.

On behalf of the retiring officers, Gen. Katumba Wamala said they were handing over a disciplined and respected institution built through sacrifice.

“We are handing to you a well-disciplined and respected institution built through sacrifice. Please protect this legacy by upholding patriotism, professionalism and integrity and, importantly, respect the civilian population. We have an umbilical cord between the UPDF and the civilian population; please guard that and, of course, remain loyal to the Constitution,” he said.

The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, urged the retiring officers to continue serving the country even after leaving active military service, saying they would remain ambassadors of the UPDF.

“The retirement marks the end of active military service for the Generals, following years of service in the UPDF in different capacities. You are our ambassadors out there, so keep representing us,” he said.

The Minister also called upon the retirees to utilise the knowledge acquired through financial management training to become ambassadors of wealth creation.

He congratulated the senior officers on reaching the milestone and wished them success in their retirement.

“Congratulations. Go with your heads high and represent Uganda. May God bless you and bless Uganda,” he said.

The retiring officers have served in various command, operational, administrative and strategic positions, contributing to the development of the UPDF and the defence and security of Uganda.

The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Defence), Hon. Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, and other UPDF officers.

BUYENDE—The Minister for the Presidency and Member of Parliament for Budiope West Constituency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, today conducted a Parish Development Model (PDM) assessment tour in Iringa West Parish, Nkondo Sub-County, Budiope West Constituency, where she interacted with PDM beneficiaries and local leaders.

Addressing the residents, Hon. Babalanda conveyed regards from H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, greetings from the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Kataaha Museveni, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the President, Hajji Yunus Kakande, and the entire staff of the Office of the President to the people of Budiope West.

She informed them that PDM remains the core flagship programme initiated by President Museveni to move households from subsistence to the money economy.

During her engagement with beneficiaries, the minister urged them not to divert PDM money into irrelevant things like marrying second wives for men but to use it with integrity and hard work to create sustainable wealth and jobs.

“I call on district technical staff, political leaders, and PDM SACCO leaders to provide proper guidance, supervision, and accountability so that our people succeed in enterprises like agriculture, poultry, and small-scale trade,” she said.

Hon. Babalanda commended the technical team of Buyende District led by the CAO for their efforts and tasked them to continue supporting beneficiaries with training, record keeping, and market linkages.

The minister informed residents that this term, the government is focusing on two major things: fighting corruption and working hard to end poverty. She said such assessment tours will continue to ensure service delivery reaches the intended beneficiaries as Uganda focuses on transitioning to an upper middle-income status.

In line with His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s directive as the champion of wealth creation, Minister Babalanda urged households to adopt specific backyard projects. She recommended poultry farming for eggs for Muslims and SDAs and piggery for non-Muslims, noting that such enterprises can generate quick returns and improve household incomes.

The minister also invited residents to join her on her thanksgiving ceremony slated for 4th September at Iringa Township Primary School as she pays thanks to God for her victory in this year’s political endeavors.

Today’s tour in Nkondo Sub-County is part of a wider monitoring exercise to ensure that PDM funds reach the intended beneficiaries and are being used for wealth creation at the household level and promised to move the whole district of Buyende District to assess the performance of PDM.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle could soon be heading back to Britain with Archie and Lilibet.

Reports say the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to relocate to a private home in the UK, with their two children expected to start school there in September.

The reported move comes six years after Harry and Meghan left their roles as senior working royals and built a new life in California.

But their return to Britain will not mean a return to royal duties.

Reports indicate that Harry and Meghan will remain non-working royals, even as they move closer to King Charles III and the wider Royal Family.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor the Sussexes have officially confirmed the relocation plans.

If the move goes ahead, Archie and Lilibet will begin a new chapter in Britain while Harry and Meghan return to the country they left in 2020.
