Cantankerous Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze, on Tuesday night branded NRM supporter and scout, Balaam Barugahara, a “useful Idiot,” to the amusement of show host, Zambaali Bulasio Mukasa, along with the ardent viewers of the Luganda weekly political talk show.
“I am not abusing him, I am only using a political term from Russia,” Nambooze labored to explain. By this time, Balaam could only shake his head in shock, while Zambaali could only commit to research after the show.
According to Merriam Webster, a useful idiot is “a naive or credulous person who can be manipulated or exploited to advance a cause or political agenda.”
Events promoter-cum-NRM political agent, Balaam,
was making an appearance on the show in line with their topic on the recent trend of monetization of politics, where he has been seen to strategically “buy off” individuals’ political fidelity.
Nambooze, who had arrived late for her weekly panelist role on the show, had earlier thrown a jibe at Balaam stating, “When I came in, I saw Balaam on set and first thought I had arrived for Saturday’s “Uncut Sabula,” not our usual Tuesday Barometer.”
According to the furious Nambooze, Balaam displayed a poor sense of analysis, undermining the quality of debate suitable for her beloved show. To her, Balaam is only supposed to be hosted on the TV station’s weekend showbiz show “Uncut Sabula.”
Following the blast, Nambooze cleverly ensured she was the last speaker on the show, denying Zambaali the opportunity to let Balaam revert by pushing him to end the show right after she had spoken.
NBS TV’s Barometer TV Program, tag lined “Akaasammeeme,” airs every Tuesday starting at 10 pm, breaking down the country’s political trends at any given time.
