MUKONO – A sense of unease has settled over the town of Mukono in Central Uganda, following the brutal murder of Ivan Oloya, a 30-year-old teacher at Seeta High School.
According to Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, “The victim was attacked and killed near the gate of Code High School, where his wife, Abbey Mercy, works as a teacher. We introduced canine units to the scene, which led to the arrest of five suspects.”
The suspects, ranging in age from 16 to 38, have been identified as:
Paul Kasumba Paul, a 21-year-old casual worker
Simon Mabale, a 23-year-old casual worker
Tom Kibuuka, a 38-year-old mechanic
Simon Lukodda, an 18-year-old casual worker
A 16-year-old casual worker
They are currently being held in custody as police investigate the motive behind Oloya’s murder.
Onyango added, “We are working tirelessly to piece together the events surrounding Oloya’s death. We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us in bringing justice to the victim’s family.”
Oloya’s body was taken to Mulago Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem. The school principal, Devis Kafumbe, remembered Oloya as a dedicated teacher who had joined the school about a year ago.
“His demise is a great loss to our school community, and we are working to support his family during this difficult time,” Kafumbe said. “Preparations for his send-off are underway, as he will be laid to rest in the eastern part of Uganda.”
This incident comes just a month after a 16-year-old student was found dead in one of the school dormitories on February 21.
As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock, grappling with the senseless loss of a young teacher’s life.
