The late MP’s widow, Twahira Akandinda, initially planned to run as an independent candidate but later endorsed Nalukoola, citing party unity
KAMPALA – The family of late Ugandan MP Muhammad Ssegirinya has become a key campaign tool in the Kawempe North by-election, with his relatives backing different candidates.
Ssegirinya’s mother, Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, and some of his widows have endorsed Alex Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba, his former political assistant, while others have thrown their weight behind National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Erias Luyimbaazi Nalukoola.
The late MP’s widow, Twahira Akandinda, initially planned to run as an independent candidate but later endorsed Nalukoola, citing party unity.
However, another widow, Mariam Nakabuye, alias Maama Nagirinya, has publicly criticized her co-wives for supporting Nalukoola, alleging that he did not stand in solidarity with the late Ssegirinya.
Nakabuye has since joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and endorsed the party’s candidate, Faridah Nambi Kigongo.
The Kawempe North by-election is set to take place on Thursday, with 10 candidates vying for the vacant seat.
Campaigns have been marred by allegations of divisions within the late MP’s family, with some relatives accusing each other of betraying Ssegirinya’s legacy.
