KAMPALA – Parliament has passed the National Coffee Amendment Bill 2024, abolishing the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and transferring its functions to the Ministry of Agriculture.
This move aligns with the government’s policy on rationalizing government agencies and public expenditure. Speaker Anita Among announced that 305 MPs attended the plenary sitting, approving the amendments.
The bill’s passage has sparked mixed reactions, with some arguing that dissolving UCDA will hinder coffee farmers’ access to essential services. Others see it as a necessary step to reduce government expenditure.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries will now oversee Uganda’s coffee industry.
