According to Mr. Bageya Waiswa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, the temporary closure will enable the ministry to carry out essential upgrades to the system. “We apologize for any inconveniences caused by the temporary closure and appreciate the public’s understanding as we work to enhance our services,” Mr. Waiswa said.
The temporary closure will affect all UDLS offices, including the Kampala Office, which will be closed on Saturday, December 14, 2024, and will reopen on Monday, December 16, 2024. Regional offices, including Jinja, Mbale, Gulu, Arua, Fort Portal, and Mbarara, will be closed from 2:00 pm on Friday, December 13, 2024, and will remain closed through Saturday, December 14, 2024, reopening on Monday, December 16, 2024.
The UDLS is a critical component of Uganda’s transportation infrastructure, responsible for licensing drivers and promoting road safety. The system has undergone significant improvements in recent years, including the introduction of a digital system that can issue new driving licenses within an hour. The UDLS has been commended for its outstanding service delivery, with the State Minister for Transport rating the services at 99% efficiency.
The Ministry of Works and Transport has assured the public that the temporary closure is necessary to ensure the continued efficiency and effectiveness of the UDLS. The ministry has encouraged the public to plan accordingly and to seek alternative arrangements for any urgent licensing needs.
