Two people have been confirmed dead after a stone quarry they were working at caved in on Monday night at Oyuer village in Rachuonyo North, Homa Bay.The two, Tobias Ombija and George Otieno Nyadiero, died on the spot while crushing stones inside the 10 feet cave.Kanyipir Location Chief, Israel Okoth Amadi, confirmed the incident.He noted that the quarry was being operated illegally without approval from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA). An excavator on a mission to rescue the miners trapped at a mine in Siaya County on December 5, 2021.FILE Amadi also asked residents to explore alternative sources of livelihood such as farming to avert similar incidents in the future.The incident in Homa Bay comes barely a fortnight after yet another in Abimbo Village in Siaya County, where a gold mine caved in.Several miners have since been rescued with a search still ongoing for one Tom Okwach, who is yet to be traced.Search operations are still on 20 days later, with the rescue team bemoaning delays in the provision of an excavator to aid the process.The incident claimed one life.One person also lost his life when a gold mine in Waringa Village, in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County collapsed.The surge in the number of gold mines caving in at the expense of minersā lives has been blamed on increased rainfall witnessed in the region.The bodies of the deceased have, in the meantime, been moved to the Kendu Bay Adventist Hospital mortuary as their families kick off burial plans.
