The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued safety directives for spectators planning to attend the weekend-long World Safari Rally (WRC) series in Naivasha.
In an advisory issued on Friday, June 23, NTSA stated that safety responsibility majorly relies on the spectators even as it detailed various dos and don’ts for the spectators attending the international event.
The road safety agency cautioned Kenyans against crossing safety tapes put up by the organisers even as it stated that it was unsafe for spectators to stand close to routes used by the rally drivers.

“Especially dangerous locations are marked that are marked as prohibited areas or no-go zone areas, do not try to enter these places, they can be terminally unsafe! Do not stand on escape roads as well.
“Obey the organisers’ instructions. If people are asked by the route marshals to leave dangerous places on the SS route, they should follow these instructions. In case of indiscipline, the special stage will be cancelled!” read the advisory.
Additionally, spectators were advised to stay alert while cheering and be ready to run in case of any safety hazard posed by the rally vehicles.
“Keep the distance from the edge of the roadway. Keep in mind the high speed of competing cars. It is impossible to eliminate either the driver’s mistake or an unpredictable technical defect of the vehicle.
“Don’t sit by the SS route and always watch, what’s happening on the special stage. Think of quick evacuation of your place, at any time keep prepared an escape way and be prepared for quick reaction.”
Spectators were also advised to watch the rally behind notable obstacles such as houses and trees which can offer a shield in case of an accident.
“Also, avoid places below the level of the route. Do not stand on the outer sides of curves,” added NTSA.
Kenyans taking their children to the rally were advised to keep an eye on them as they can easily slip away from them and get into the rally route.
On the other hand, motorists were advised to park their vehicles in designated parking spaces to avoid losses that can be incurred in the event of a collision with high-speed rally cars.
“Avoid driving on access roads upstream of competition vehicles approaching the SS during the rally. Roadways to the special stages are often narrow and racers could be in hurry,” advised the NTSA.
Other practices that are banned include taking pets to the special stages, throwing items on the rally routes and standing in front of rally signs.
