The Metrological Department of Kenya (MET) has issued an advisory warning Kenyans of adverse weather conditions that will be experienced in the country in the next five days.
Through a notice released on Thursday, June 2, the weather department noted that some parts of the country will experience strong winds and large waves starting from June 2 to June 6.
The adverse weather conditions will vary depending on the region.
Counties expected to be affected include Turkana , Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Meru, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale .

The Standard MET stated that the adverse weather may cause structural damages and in extreme cases, uproot trees in some of the areas.
“Residents in all the areas mentioned above are advised to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and very large waves over the Indian Ocean. Strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damage,” MET cautioned.
According to the weather department, the adverse conditions may lead to reduced visibility, cause vessels to capsize and threatens those who engage in maritime activities.
“Those in the areas of concern should be on high alert. Everyone is urged to continue listening to local media as updates will be provided if conditions change significantly. Further advisories may be issued as the weather events evolve,” MET added.
Over the last five years, the country has experienced extreme weather conditions that have resulted in change of weather patterns including delayed rainfalls and prolonged drought.
This advisory comes barely a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta challenged world leaders to speed up a climate deal during United Nations’ Conference on the Human Environment.
He called for a dramatic pace and quality of our actions as the world consolidates efforts to solve global environmental issues.
“By the time we head to Cop27 (the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Egypt later this year) we should aim to have developed a comprehensive, holistic and transformative package of environmental actions,” he stated.
