Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai in conjunction with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has ordered a joint multi-Agency crackdown in a bid to curb the spate of accidents that have occurred in the recent past.
In a statement by NPS spokesperson Bruno Shioso on Wednesday, June 8, the crackdown is aimed at weeding out all the non-compliant motor vehicles and motorists who are violating the Traffic Act.
The police service attributed the numerous accidents to human factors, noting that future fatalities could be avoided should road users take caution and adhere to the traffic rules.

NTSA “The National Police Service and the National Transport and Safety Authority have noted with concern an alarming increase in road traffic crashes incidences on our roads. The two agencies, NPS and NTSA further regret all the fatalities and injuries as a result of these unfortunate crashes.”
“It is regrettable that most crashes are a result of human-related factors. Motorists and other road users are therefore reminded to remain vigilant, cautious, and responsible whilst in charge of a motor vehicle, or whenever using a public road as pedestrians. A higher level of consciousness and personal responsibility towards oneself and others shall go a long way in mitigating the rising incidences of crashes,” he stated.
The police highlighted the numerous accidents including the fatal crash that involved a public transport bus ferrying passengers from Garissa to Nairobi along Thika-Mwingi Road and a saloon vehicle. The accident led to seven fatalities and five injuries.
“This spike in crashes is worrying and requires urgent redress from all the stakeholders. To date, we have recorded a total of 1,968 deaths as against 1,800 as of the 3rd of June of 2022 and 2021 respectively, giving a positive variance of 9.3 per cent.
“The increasing trend is replicated under other categories of serious and slight injuries,” the NPS noted.
The police urged motorists to ensure compliance at both the county and national levels.
“Therefore, all motorists and other road users are requested to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies at the national and county levels towards achieving the objectives of this initiative. Non-compliant vehicles should be kept off public roads to avoid any inconvenience to passengers,” NPS noted.
