Makerere University School of Public Health has been granted a college status, Mak VC Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe revealed.VC Nawangwe said on Friday during the school’s 70th anniversary that the school of public health has been granted college status with a single school. This brings the total number of colleges at Makerere University to 11.Speaking at the anniversary, VC Nawangwe said the School of Public Health brings in almost 50% of all research grants, both in the number and in value. He noted that the school highly contributes to the university’s global ranking.World Health Organisation (WHO) country representative Ms. Christabel Abewe said WHO looks forward to strengthening partnerships with the Makerere University School of Public Health.“As @WHO, we look forward to strengthening this invaluable partnership with @MakSPH. We remain committed to supporting Makerere School of Public Health by providing technical expertise, knowledge, and global best practices,” she said.The origins of the school date back to 1957 when the Department of Preventive Medicine was established at Makerere University Medical School. In 1975, the department was elevated to Makerere Institute of Public Health and moved to a new five-story building of its own.The Institute was elevated to a full-fledged School of Public Health and made a constituent school of the Makerere University College of Health Sciences in 2007.
