Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) through the directorate of Research and Graduate Training (DRGT) has organized its 6th annual PhD symposium.
The symposium which was held at Kihumuro (main campus) prepares PhD students to enrich and successfully complete their studies.
Over 30 PhD students presented their research abstracts before their supervisors to showcase how far they’ve gone with their findings in preparations for their upcoming PhD defense.
The symposium was graced by the Deputy Vice chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs Professor Nixon Kamukama who thanked the DRGT for the innovations in the research arena that has contributed to the growth of MUST in the research field.

“I would like to thank the DRGT board for this important event, this journey started in 2016 and up to now we are still moving. I would like to encourage PhD students not be afraid of criticisms from their respective supervisors because these are aimed at shaping to ensure that quality research is produced at the end of the day. I’m advising students to desist from the habit of hiring mercenaries to do research on their behalf. It’s you who will supervise the PhD students in years to come and they’ll not be equipped well if you don’t have the capacity to guide them,” he communicated.
Associate Professor Eunice Kagoro, the DRGT Board member revealed that MUST has finalized the requirements of accessing the plagiarism software to improve the quality of research produced by MUST students.

“Over the years, MUST has been recording an increasing number of PhD Graduates up to 29 that graduated last year. As DRGT, we are here to offer full support to ensure that all students enrolling to MUST for postgraduate studies achieve their academic goals. The anti-plagiarism software is going to be rolled out to the staff and to students with official MUST email addresses. This will be used to detect plagiarism in the topics selected and work produced by students at MUST,” Prof Kagoro explained.
MUST has been credited by both the government and the public as the leading institution in producing quality researchers needed in solving complex problems within the communities.
