An accident at the Likoni Crossing Channel in Mombasa has left a woman dead and a man sustaining multiple severe injuries.
The accident occurred after a lorry carrying building blocks lost control while descending the mainland ramp towards the ferry and fatally hit the pedestrian woman, leading to her death on the spot. The man sustained multiple fractures to both legs.
The accident happened at 7:00pm on Friday. The man was rushed to the Likoni Sub-County Hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken to Coast General Hospital Mortuary.
The lorry was taken to the Likoni Police Station awaiting further investigations.

The Likoni Ferry is prone to accidents that have cost the lives of many. The most publicised accident that happened at the channel was in 2019 after a woman and her daughter lost their lives.
The 35-year-old woman and her four-year-old daughter lost their lives after the vehicle they were in reverse while the Likoni ferry was midstream, causing it to fall into the Indian Ocean.
The accident saw their vehicle stay in the Indian Ocean for over three weeks as rescuers tried to retrieve it.
A recent revelation has exposed the wave of accidents that have been happening around the country in 2024.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), road crash casualties have risen this year, with 21,620 cases recorded by November 2024.
More than 10,662 people sustained serious injuries between January and November 2024, as compared to the 9,501 recorded in 2023.
Of those killed, pedestrians made up the majority so far this year with 1,637 as compared to 1,413 in 2023, while 788 passengers died between January and November 2024 as compared to 673 in 2023.
According to NTSA, the leading causes of fatal crashes included hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and vehicles and motorcycles losing control.
