According to Police, Maloba is said to have committed the offence on Christmas day at around 10:00 pm after taking local brew for almost the whole day.
The fire reduced the household property including mattresses, utensils, food and clothing to ashes. Beatrice Kandeke, one of the residents, says her entire household property perished in the fire, saying she lacks where to keep her 11 grandchildren.
“I thank God that we were saved. However, we have lost everything. I am actually stuck and not sure where I will be staying with my grandchildren,” she said.Joseph Wandera, another survivor says they laboured to save their property in vain. “The incident happened when we were asleep and it was hard for us to save anything. Our neighbours, however, alerted police to arrest Maloba who attempted to flee,” he said.The Busoga East Police Spokesperson, James Mubi confirms the incident, saying the suspect will be subjected to a mental checkup before they extract a statement from him.
