Carol Nantongo has revealed that singer Eddie Yawe dragged her to the Uganda
Performing Rights Association (UPRS) after they released their hit
collaboration ‘Tukigale’ where she learnt she had no right to the song.
She said it
shocked her so much because they contributed to the song 50/50 from lyrics to
studio fees to instruments. She noted that she didn’t bother to consider details
like ‘rights’ when they were making the song because they had a good professional relationship and were good
friends.
“We didn’t talk
much about who would own the song because as friends, I thought it would automatically
be ours. I contributed to studio fees, guitar and other equipment. Even promotion
of both the audio and video on radio and TVs,” she said.
Nantongo also
claimed that she was trolled many times by people close to her wondering
why she collaborated with an ‘old man’ like Yawe.
“I was
insulted for singing with an old man. But for me it was a win. He gave me an
opportunity so I was happy. Ugandans here disrespect old people thinking they
cannot do anything well. But I was proud because I have always admired him. I
knew it would add a lot to me and it did,” she explained.
She pointed
out that her woes stem from the fact that established artistes underlook the
upcoming that when a collaboration hits, they assume it is wholly because of
them, not considering the upcoming artistes contribution.
