This was revealed by the Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner George Bakunda while receiving and handing over certificates and Bi- laws to the District and Municipal community development officers in the district board room on Friday.
The program is meant to get Ugandans doing similar jobs to form savings groups, whose bank balances will be boosted by a grant from the government.
Through Emyooga, the government is to support 18 categories of associations, including Boda Boda riders, women entrepreneurs, welders, taxi operators, fishermen, restaurant operators, mechanics, Journalists, youth leaders, PWDs, performing artists’, market vendors, saloon operators, produce dealers, tailors and elected leaders.
However 17 SACCOs are to benefit from each constituency since the journalists have not yet formed the SACCO.
The overarching goal of the initiative is to convert 68% of the country’s homesteads that are currently involved in subsistence production to market-oriented activities.
RDC Bakunda tasked the Microfinance Support Centre, the implementing partner to train SACCO leaders in basic managerial skills especially on how they will operate.
He urged members of the Emyooga SACCO to own and increase the membership, shares and savings of their respective Saccos if the initiative is to fulfill the target goals.
