Security Minister Rtd Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi has ordered an investigation into death threats against Speaker of Parliament Hon, Anita Among.
Among told the House on Thursday that her vehicle was recently being trailed by unknown people, and that she had officially filed a complaint with security.
“This is something I have only shared with the Leader of Opposition and I can now share it publicly. I have got an assassination report…there are people wanting to assassinate me,” said Among.
The Speaker, who earlier this year took over from her departed predecessor Jacob Oulanyah, did not provide evidence to back up her claims.
However, Gen Muhwezi and Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on Friday met Among at the latter’s office.
During the meeting, Among narrated her security concerns which she asked Muhwezi to investigate.
Among, given her position, has access to the President.
It remains unclear why she decided to publicly call for an investigation into her security fears instead of reaching out to the President to handle the matter.
The fact that Muhwezi had to physically visit Among’s office underscores a possible fallout between Among and the executive.
The development came against the backdrop of Among’s attempts to block the popular Nyege Nyege tourism event in eastern Uganda.
The executive responded by defending the event in what was seen as a slap in the face of the Speaker.
Earlier this week, Parliament passed the draconian Computer Misuse (Amendment) Bill, 2022 which freedom fighters say has the potential to chill protected speech and expression.
Ugandans took to social media to express their outrage and disappointment with Parliament for passing such an unfortunate legislation.
From her statements in Parliament, Among appeared desperate.
“Hon Prime Minister, investigate what is happening and start with mine because it is not hearsay,” said Among.
“Please follow it up with Internal Affairs because my car is still being followed up to now,” she added.
Among’s motorcade is protected by counter terrorism personnel. It remains unclear why the protective force does not engage perceived assassins to neutralize the alleged security threat,
High profile figures in Uganda have been assassinated under mysterious circumstances.
These include AIGP Andrew Kaweesi, Maj Mohamed Kiggundu and Prosecutor Joan Kagezi and several muslim clerics.
