ANKOLE- The World Food Program head of Area office South Western Region Emily Doe has acknowledged that weather forecast information is paramount to farmers as far as food security is concerned on both commercial and subsistence farming across the globe.
Emily Doe blamed the food insecurity and other natural calamities in some parts of the country to the people who fail to interpret and adhere to daily weather updates realized by Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA).
She commended the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) for the work being done as far as updating the general public and for bringing on board farmer groups who are the most beneficiaries.
She made remarks on Thursday during the ongoing Western Uganda Sub National Climate Outlook Forum for September to October 2022 season/ training of trainer (ToT) at Hotel Triangle Mbarara which attracted chief administrative officers, district production, Natural resource officers, farmers’ groups and media within the districts of western Uganda.
Dr Anthony Kagoro, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative revealed that next week the organization will sign a memorandum of understanding with Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) committing their support for sustainable weather information and early warning systems.
The director of Training and Research at UNMA Dr Bob Alex Ogwang hailed the implementing partners for funding weather forecasts across the country which is beneficial to many stakeholders.
Dr Bob Alex Ogwang asked the participants to cascade the information into simplified local languages for understanding.
He implored the general public to always be keen to weather forecasts if they are to avoid natural calamities in the areas.
The chief administrative officers (CAOs) including Turyahweebwa Hanny of Kamwenge District pledged to be part of the team to mitigate climate change brought by human activities in their areas especially in districts hosting refugees.
The two-day training is under the theme “managing climate risks for resilience” organized by Uganda National Meteorological Authority in collaboration with World Food Program and Food and Agriculture Organization.
